‘Water’ mainly consists of continuing watercolour drawings depicting water and colour in a traditional style. The structure of extended papers of the same size is designed to enable continuous practice, uninterrupted by changing locations of the practice. It is a repeated practice that incorporates variables in the environment during practice.

The shape of water that is shown in the watercolour pieces started with a pencil drawing first. In the ongoing process of depicting the shape of softness, it naturally flowed into the shape of water.

The water and colour depiction began from the thoughts on the colour blue and the shape of water. I came across a theory that argues the concept of the colour blue emerged relatively late in languages, and I strongly objected to that theory, because I perceived the colour blue very distinctly. Then, I went to the northern part of Iceland in the wintertime, and I was overwhelmed by the colour blue, because I was surrounded by it. Everything was blue, so it was a sort of default. Water drawing started to contain the concept, from making blue with not exactly blue, but certainly blue.

From the experiences, the work in blue is attempting to deliver how we perceive a certain colour may vary depending on the ground where we are standing, and also on the background, which we aren’t always aware of.

Colour consists of the unique frequencies in the constant flow, and how it looks varies with the many kinds of light sources surrounding us, and also with our mind and thinking. The natural light – the light, like a living being, which is also in a constant flow – has a different colour depending on where we are. Our minds and thoughts, depending on where we stand, may affect how we perceive the colour.
So, this project ‘Water’ with water and colour drawings, will include where it was created and under what kind of light it would be seen, and what other colours around it affects the creation at the time of practice.
